New at the Drugstore: Wet ‘n Wild, Maybelline, Rimmel, & NYC

whatsnew10

New and limited edition Spring 2014 products have already begun to hit the drugstore shelves, so I’m here with a roundup of a few of the new products I’ve purchased over the past week. As I sit writing this and looking out the window at another grey, snow-filled sky, all I can think about is how completely ready I am for spring to finally arrive. While the weather certainly isn’t cooperating, these bright fresh makeup items are at least a reminder that spring is on the way– we’re going to make it!

Wet ‘n Wild Megalast nail color in Candid Affair (34360) and Sophisticated Lady (34359) – I think Spring ’14 is going to be all about shimmery pastel nails, so WnW is spot on with these  shades. There are six total limited edition Megalast shades in this collection which I spotted at Harmon’s, but should also be showing up at Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid soon. It’s no secret that the Megalast formula is one of my favorites, and these two shades are no exception. Candid Affair is a pale shimmery lilac, while Sophisticated Lady is a frosty rose gold.

Maybelline Master Glaze Blush in Barely Pink – This shimmery peachy pink blush stick is part of Maybelline’s limited edition Dare To Go Nude collection that recently hit drugstores as well. Thought to be a potential dupe for the NARS Orgasm Multiple, this cream blush is a dream to apply, but is slightly lacking in pigmentation, even on my fair skin. For darker skin tones I’d say this would be a beautiful cream highlighter, and for me I think I’ll need to play around a bit more with the level of intensity I can build up. While it’s no NARS dupe, it is a great cream blush formula that has me wanting to check out some of the permanent collection shades.

Rimmel London Scandaleyes Eyeshadow Paint in Chestnut Taupe (007) – Ever since reading rave reviews about the Rimmel Scandaleyes Eyeshadow Paints from British beauty bloggers I’ve been dying for them to make an appearance in the USA. Good news is the wait is finally over and these definitely live up to their reputation! If you’re a fan of the Maybelline Color Tattoos the Rimmel Paints will be right up your alley, as they have the same excellent versatility (worn opaque or sheer, as a shadow, base, or liner). Chestnut Taupe can be worn intensely for a beautiful metallic look or blended out with a fluffy brush for a more natural wash of color.

Wet ‘n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain in Nudist Colony (129) – I’ve already shared my love for the WnW Balm Stains (here) so I decided to add another color to my collection. I was on the hunt for Rico Mauve, but when it was sold out decided to give Nudist Colony a try. I typically stear clear of nude shades as it’s hard to find one that suits my complexion, but I figured there wasn’t much to lose here as these balm stains retail for just over $2. I’m still not convinced that the brownish orange Nudist Colony is the right shade for me, but the next time I’m feeling like my look should include a nude lip I will definitely give it a go.

NYC City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color in Riverside Rose (020) – As you can tell I can’t say no to a chubby lip crayon, so when a new NYC display popped up at my local CVS I picked up Riverside Rose to give it a test. Truth be told it’s a lovely pinky mauve that is a perfect My Lips But Better shade on me; however, I absolutely cannot get past its terrible fragrance. I’m not normally one bothered by fragrance in cosmetics, but the cheap, sweet, fruity scent of these NYC lip crayons are too much for me to handle. Definitely try these at your own risk, especially if you’re sensitive to strong scents in your makeup!

Well there you have the newest additions to my drugstore makeup stash. So far I’m loving the Spring ’14 new releases and can’t wait to get my hands on the limited edition Maybelline Color Tattoos or the new Rimmel chubby lip pencils too. Let’s hope that rocking some of these fun spring shades will encourage the weather to get the hint!

Have a great weekend,

New at the Drugstore: Wet ‘n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain

As usual my local Harmon’s is a great place to find the latest products released at the drugstore. My last trip was no exception, when I stumbled upon a display of the new Wet ‘n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stains. Like the other chubby lip crayons we’ve come to love from Revlon, Maybelline, Clinique, and others, this pencil features a a twist-up pointed tip that makes application a breeze. Even for Wet ‘n Wild I was impressed at this product’s low price– just $2.29 with a stick-on $1 off coupon, bringing the total down to $1.29 per balm stain. Although I have enough chubby lip crayons to last me a lifetime, at that price I couldn’t say no buying just one to give it a try.

Wet ‘n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain in 124 Lady and the Vamp
(sorry the photo shows the French side, but you get the idea!)

Lady and the Vamp (124) is a lovely berry shade, perfect for the fall and winter months. The formula goes on sheer, but can be built up for more shine and opacity, as you can see in the swatch on the left. There is no discernible taste or smell, which I appreciate, and the color lasts without getting dry or patchy for several hours. Lady and the Vamp has no shimmer or glitter, but a few other colors in the display I saw looked like they might have a slight pearly finish. My only complaint is the lack of staining power, as I expected a deep, rich color to be left behind by this berry shade, and instead my lips just have a light pink wash when the product has entirely worn off. For a product that costs a small fraction of the other chubby lip crayons on the market though, the Wet ‘n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain is definitely worth a try.

Have you seen the Megaslicks Balm Stains in your local drugstores yet? If I can find another display (the one at my Harmon’s was pretty picked over) with the $1 off coupons I will definitely pick up a few more shades. I also think these would make great little stocking stuffers for your make-up loving family and friends. If you’ve tried out the Megaslicks Balm Stains leave a comment and let me know if you’re loving them as much as I am!

September Favorites

As the month of September is coming to a close I’d like to share some of the beauty items I’ve been loving and using the most frequently this month. After rounding up all the products it seems I’ve been in a bit of a neutral phase, although I’m sure I’ll stray from that in October as the weather gets cooler and I bust out more of my dark vampy colors for lips and nails. Until then, here’s what’s graced my face for most of this past month:

septfavorites

Wet ‘n Wild Color Icon eyeshadow trio in Enlisting For Beauty – A limited edition offering in Wet ‘n Wild’s current Tough Girl/Beauty Army collection, I can’t get enough of these gorgeous shades of brown. With two matte and one satin offering these shadows create a perfect understated eye to pair with a bold lip. What’s more, they feature the notorious high quality and saturated pigmentation we’ve come to expect from the Color Icon line of shadows.

Revlon Photoready Color Correcting Primer – I picked up this primer based on a recommendation over at Musings of a Muse and I’ve been in love with it since day one. It does a pretty good job at canceling out redness in my skin, and does an excellent job at blurring enlarged pores. It’s a little pricey for a drugstore product, so I’d recommend looking for Revlon coupons or BOGO deals before you pick it up.

Sigma Highlighting Pencil – This product is great for giving your arches a little extra oomph using the matte pink side, or giving your inner corner or waterline some sparkle with the gold shimmery side. Rich, creamy, and pigmented, this pencil goes on smoothly and stays put all day. I can’t recommend it enough!

Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in Airy Fairy – Frequently compared to MAC’s High Tea and Creme Cup, Airy Fair is a mauve-toned nude shade with a satin finish. Like other Rimmel Lasting Finish lipsticks, it goes on smoothly and wears well over several hours. Similar to the Wet ‘n Wild neutrals I’ve been loving, Airy Fairy is my go-to if I want to play down my lips and rock and intense eye look. It’s also perfect for casual days when I want to look put together, but not too done up.

Wet ‘n Wild Megalast Nail Color in Wet Cement – I can already tell this will be my most loved fall nail color- a smokey dark neutral, it seems to go with everything. The Megalast formula is amazing, so creamy and opaque after just one coat, and lasts for days even on my chip-prone nails. I also love the extra wide brush which makes using this polish a breeze. I’ve let my nails go naked for the past few days, but I think it’s time to do a fresh mani with Wet Cement before we head into the weekend.

Let me know in the comments section what products you’ve been loving in September!
