What’s In My Travel Makeup Bag

I left bright and early Saturday morning for a week-long business trip, so sadly there isn’t much excitement to share in a Weekend Wrap-up this week. Rather, since I’m traveling, I thought I’d share the items that made it into my travel makeup bag. I’d say there’s a good mix of old favorites and new products I’m trying out. Most were selected because they’re either easy to travel with, good for natural (work day) makeup looks, or because I couldn’t go seven whole days without them– or a combination of all three. If you’d like to hear my thoughts on any of these products I’d be happy to do an in-depth review, just leave me a comment and let me know!

New drugstore makeup: Revlon Matte & Lacquer Balms and Maybelline Color Elixirs

If you didn’t see my post yesterday I hit the jackpot at the new Harmon’s Face Values that just opened a few blocks away from me. With a beauty section that trumps even the largest Walgreens or CVS, the new fall collections and limited edition products were plentiful and I had to exercise every ounce of self-restraint in my body to keep from spending hundreds of dollars. The three products I’ve been on the hunt for are the new Revlon Matte and Lacquer Balms, the new Maybelline Color Elixers, and the limited edition fall Maybelline Color Tattoos. I ended up finding two out of the three, so I’d say it was a success!

Let’s start with the Revlon Colorburst Matte Balms. The colors I picked up are 220 Showy (a bright cool pink) and 245 Audacious (a nearly neon coral). These colors went on smooth and opaque, and felt less drying than your average matte lipstick, perhaps due to their “balm” quality. In the photo below I’ve compared them with one of the limited edition L’oreal Color Riche Le Matte lip colors in 409 Matte For Me.  I would say the quality and formulation of these products are nearly identical, which is great news for several reasons– the L’oreal products are limited edition while it looks like the Revlon balms will be part of their permanent collection, the Revlon matte balms feature 8 shades (based on the display I saw) versus L’oreal’s 4 matte shades, and I picked up the Revlon balms for $6.99 versus the $8-something I paid for the L’oreal products. I definitely plan to add more of these to my collection and highly recommend picking some up if you love the look of matte lip color!

In the Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balms I purchased 110 Coquette (a neutral pink with slight shimmer) and 135 Provocateur (a rich red with berry undertones). In the photo below I’ve compared them to the L’oreal Color Riche La Laque lip color in 414 I Laque You A Lot. While the Revlon Lacquer Balms are pretty, they didn’t exactly deliver on my hopes for a lip lacquer like L’oreal did. While the L’oreal product seems extremely rich, opaque, and like a true liquid lipstick, the Revlon Lacquer Balms are nearly indistinguishable from the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains. I love the Balm Stains, so while I can’t complain about the similar Lacquer Balms, I am a bit disappointed that Revlon didn’t knock this one out of the park with a richer, glossier formula. I’d recommend picking these up if you’re a Balm Stain fan and there’s a color that catches your eye, otherwise I’d pass.

And last (and perhaps least) I picked up one of the new Maybelline Color Elixirs in shade 005 Breathtaking Apricot (a warm pink with coral undertones and silver shimmer).  Buzz around the beauty blogger community was that the Color Elixirs were Maybelline’s answer to the L’oreal Caresse Wet Shine Stains (debated dupes for the YSL glossy stains). While the L’oreal Wet Shine Stain formula and texture isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, I enjoy the few shades I own and was excited to try Maybelline’s version. Sadly the Color Elixirs are nothing like the L’oreal Wet Shine Stains, but rather bear more resemblance to the Almay Color + Care Liquid Lip Balms– a creamy balm-like formula that goes on fairly sheer. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Almay liquid lip balms quite a bit, but I am disappointed that the Color Elixirs turned out to be more of a balm than a glossy stain.  Points to Maybelline though for a huge color range of cream and shimmer shades, so if you can’t get your hands on the Almay balms, or are looking for a color they don’t offer, the Maybelline Color Elixirs are a good choice. As for me, I much more prefer an opaque lip so I think this one will be going back to the store.

With all these new purchases I think I need to go on a bit of a no-buy for the next few weeks (at least in the lippie department!), but we’ll see how that goes. I’m excited to try these out some more and work them into my fall makeup looks. Have you spotted any new products at your local drugstore lately? Let me know in the comments section if you’ve tried anything new from Revlon, Maybelline, or your favorite brand!

Fall Beauty Jackpot!

Just a quick update to confirm that my hunch was correct, and the new Harmon Face Values store that opened a few blocks away was indeed a goldmine of recently released and limited edition products! I was able to pick up the new Revlon Colorburst Matte and Lacquer balms and the new Maybelline Color Elixir liquid lip balms. There was also a display with several shades left of the limited edition L’oreal Color Riche La Laque and Le Matte lip colors (see my review/swatches here), but I restrained myself since I already own four and was picking up quite a few new lippies on this trip. They also had a large display of Halloween makeup and 2 full aisles of nail polishes that included quite a few new fall collections, but again, I held back.

I’ll post swatches and my first impressions tomorrow, so check back soon!
