Weekend Wrap-up #5

This was one of those non-stop weekends that remind me why I moved to New York City… there is literally always something going on! I kicked off the weekend on Friday night by going for drinks down in Tribeca with an old friend and his wife who were in town for a wedding. It was great to introduce them to my boyfriend and catch up on what we’ve all been up to since the last time I saw them. Saturday started early with a birthday brunch with one of my best friends and her parents down in Soho, and afterward I took advantage of being in the neighborhood to pop by the Makeup Forever boutique in the Soho Sephora (plus a few other shops in the neighborhood too!) Later that evening we headed to the Lower East Side to celebrate a joint birthday party for two great friends at a beer hall. By this point I was running on fumes, so once I had the chance to say hello and catch up with everyone we went home for some late night pizza and it was off to bed. Sunday was spent with some family who were in town, showing them our favorite spots in the neighborhood and going out for delicious Italian food and gelato! After such a crazy weekend I feel like I need another two full days just to relax, but I can’t complain that the past few days have been filled with so much fun and amazing people.

And now that you’ve gotten the rundown on my weekend activities, here’s a quick Outfit Of The Day (night?) from Friday:

Clothes: Mossimo leather jacket (a bit too big!), Alexander McQueen scarf, Gap tank top, Uniqlo leggings, and Blowfish booties // Face: MAC Lady Danger lipstick, Ray-Ban glasses

What did you do this weekend? I hope you had just as much fun as I did,  but perhaps a little time to relax too! I’ll be back tomorrow with a review of my October Birchbox that finally arrived in the mail today. See you then!

New MAC purchases: Blush, lipstick, & brush

Happy Saturday! Here’s hoping your weekend is off to a beautiful start. To add on to the review and photos I posted yesterday of my newly acquired MAC eyeshadows, here’s the rest of my haul– a blush, lipstick, and my first MAC brush.

After the gorgeous orange lips I’d seen featured on some runways at NYFW I knew I wanted to add a matte orangey-red color to my collection. I’d had my eye on Ruby Woo, Russian Red, and Lady Danger for a while, but after trying each at the MAC store I decided that Lady Danger was the exact fall lip color I’d been searching for.

A vivid, bright coral red, Lady Danger features MAC’s classic matte formula which goes on smoothly and stays put for hours. Compared to other matte lipsticks I own (including my favorite, NARS’ velvet matte lip pencils) I found this formula to be less drying than usual with great staying power. I wore Lady Danger out to dinner last night (more on that in Monday’s Weekend Wrap-up post) and it held up fairly well through multiple courses of eating and drinking.

The next item in my recent MAC haul was Plum Foolery, a sheer-tone shimmer blush described as “faintly plum.” Don’t let the “faintly” description fool you though (ha!), this one definitely packs a punch of both color and shimmer. It’s the perfect compliment to my pink-undertoned skin with just enough sparkle to skip an extra highlighter, but not so glittery that I feel comfortable wearing it even on casual makeup days. I tend to get stuck in ruts with a blush, wearing the same color for weeks on end, and I can already tell Plum Foolery is going to be my latest go-to check color.

Finally, I added my first MAC brush to my collection with the purchase of the cult-favorite 217 blending brush. As someone who was perfectly content with drugstore variety makeup brushes for ages, I had trouble justifying the real need for the 217 in my life, but at the last minute decided to tack it on to my order. The MAC website describes the brush as having “fine, densely packed fibers that are arranged in an oval shape” good for “shading or blending of color or creamy products.” With its slightly pinched ferrule and fluffy top it reminds me of my current favorite eye brush, the Real Techniques deluxe crease brush, just slightly more stiff. In the future I’ll probably still stick to my Real Techniques and Sigma brushes, but I’m glad to have added this MAC classic to my collection and have enjoyed using it to create both natural and smokey eye looks.

Well that’s it for this week’s recent MAC purchases. I hope you enjoyed seeing a few shots and first impressions of these products, all of which I’m falling more in love with as I continue to incorporate them into my daily makeup routine. Like I said before, I’m already working on a new MAC wishlist for my next order, so if you have any recommendations, please share!
